I know some of you still come here - here's another project of mine you might be interested in.
Powwow is a place where you can keep in touch with classmates from Lewes Old Grammar School Sixth Form's Class of 2005 and Class of 2006.
Some of you have already registered, but most of you haven't - spread the word, and let everybody know what you're up to!

| Whatever Happened (14 Apr 2005, 11:44 am) | I was tittilated to see today that people still hit this site of their own free will, pretty much to play the games. Almost two years have passed since this version went live, and I've done absolutely nothing to the site :P. Not really likely to either.

Eek. Big post. If you have the time, please read it all, since it will help you find your way round this new site :) .
Well, it wasn't too long, was it? Roughly a year after the last major design change, I have done it again. The last design looked nice, but there were some fundamental difficulties inherrent in it, such as its appalling compatibility and need for certain screen resolutions. On the interactive side, it also sucked :) . This new design is written in PHP, making it supremely interactive. Since the last design I have bought up new hosting which supports PHP and MySQL, meaning that I am now writing sites using these languages, rather than just plain old HTML. Using PHP, each page on the site is generated when it is requested by a user, meaning that, potentially, the content can be completely different each time it is viewed. It also means that I can easily work with databases, allowing for the storage of data and its fast retrieval. This means that I can take data from users and use it in ways such as Forums and take feedback on parts of the site such as the Games. Yes, the games! :D More on those later.
In this build I have worked hard to make the site both pretty and useful. I have tried to ensure that all the sections I include are actually worth something, and will be used, and I have taken out the pages that nobody looked at from the last site. Gone are the Surf and Classics pages, replaced in part by the Pics page which is simply a list of images, regularly added to. By trying to keep the site simple, I hope I can increase its appeal.
The intended audience of the site is also changing. With this build I am trying to appeal to visitors from all areas of interest and skill - including the Games for those who like to use them, but also some Tools that I find useful, but that the average user would not. In this way I hope to broaden the user base of Cafe Porcupine by including something for everyone.
New in this design is Registration. Previously all services were available without the need to register - indeed it wasn't actually possible because the site was not database-driven at that stage - and this is still the case, more or less. Registration is only required to use features such as the Forum and give feedback on articles and games, but users are encouraged to register anyway, because that is a key part of a community site, and that is what Cafe Porcupine now is. Registration allows you to have a profile and prescence on the site, rather than just being another Anonymous user. Registration is simple, and once complete, the site can identify you uniquely. Once registered you can enjoy areas of the site such as the Forum, and help with the running of the site by giving feedback on it.
Next we look at the Games. Cafe Porcupine has always had games on it, and this version is no exception. I have reviewed each of the games from the old site, discarded those that nobody played, and added new ones. Users can now vote for each game to give it a rating that will show other users how good the game is. You can also post comments on each game to give other users your opinions. Bugs in games can now also be reported, so they will be fixed as soon as possible.
Another new section on the site is the BOFH archive. BOFH stands for Bastard Operator From Hell, and the archive is a collection of computer-related stories about the exploits of the BOFH. They make amusing reading if you understand them, or even if you don't. :)
This site now costs quite a bit to maintain, but I am carrying on another Cafe Porcupine tradition - keeping it free. You will not find advertising banners on this site, nor will you find a whimpering PayPal button begging for donations. There are no popups on the site except where necessary for features on its pages. You will not get sent junk mail if you register.
All I ask in return for your using the site is that you tell someone about it. I don't advertise much, and so Word of Mouth is my best available tool. Please, if you like Cafe Porcupine, then tell your friends. You can use the Tell page to send an email to someone, telling them about this site. It's quick and easy to do, and won't cost you a penny. My only reward for running this site is to see people using it, and that's where you can help.
And that's what's new on Cafe Porcupine! I won't make any promises about keeping this design, since I broke all the previous ones, but let me know what you think of it - register and post on the Forum. Explore all the sections of this site, and I hope you will find something that entertains you. Cafe Porcupine is now in its fifth year, with hopefully more to come (with your help), so until next time...
